Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of the CDU called for deeper European involvement in the United States’ strategy on the Iran conflict before meeting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the G‑7 summit. He told RTL/ntv, “We Europeans must be included in the American mindset about how this war can be ended. Therefore we need to understand when and under what conditions the war can be concluded”. Wadephul warned that the conflict has already had significant repercussions: “Our economy is heavily impacted, and energy prices are climbing”.
At the same time, he pledged Germany’s support for the United States. “Germany stands beside the U.S. as a partner” he said. He highlighted Germany’s extensive diplomatic network in the region, arguing that it would be of great help to the U.S. in the coming period, and emphasized Germany’s readiness to assist as a military ally at any time. Wadephul also hinted at additional contributions toward securing a possible peace, noting that “that can be discussed”.
