Hardt Blasts Steinmeier’s Iran War Label Amid Legal Debate

Jürgen Hardt, the foreign‑policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, criticized President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier for labeling the war in Iran as a breach of international law.
Hardt told the news portal T‑Online that the government, which is solely responsible for that question, has not yet completed its legal assessment. He added that all representatives of the Federal Republic in office and by virtue of their position should respect this process.

He went on to say that the federal government is acting deliberately and sovereignly amid a complex situation, a point that was evident in the “excellent” speech delivered by Minister Wadephul.

Previously, at Berlin’s 75‑year anniversary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Steinmeier remarked that Germany’s foreign policy would be less convincing if it did not call violations of international law merely “violations”. He noted that, as with the Gaza war, the Iran conflict is “undeniably unlawful”.
