Ansgar Heveling to Become President of Germany’s Federal Court of Auditors

The CDU member of the Bundestag, Ansgar Heveling, is slated to become the new president of the Federal Court of Auditors, the highest financial watchdog in the republic, according to the wishes of the black‑red governing coalition. At a Tuesday afternoon party meeting, the Union’s group leader Jens Spahn (CDU) informed the representatives about the decision, reports the “Tagesspiegel”.

Heveling, a jurist from North Rhine‑Westphalia, has served as legal adviser to the CDU/CSU parliamentary group since 2018. The Union leadership noted on Tuesday that members of the Federal Court of Auditors must act “judicially independent”. “With this mode of work and the accompanying sense of independence” they explained, “Ansgar Heveling as legal adviser is very familiar with the role”.

The coalition partner SPD has already indicated its approval of the nomination, according to sources within the Union’s parliamentary circles. Heveling’s official election in the Bundestag is scheduled for early May, and it has yet to be decided who will succeed him.
