Bärbel Bas Fights Back Against Prolonged SPD Leadership Debate After State Election Loss

After the SPD’s electoral defeat in Rhineland‑Palatinate, party chair Bärbel Bas opposed holding a debate about new leadership.

She told ARD’s “Tagesthemen” that the question of fresh faces at the top was “offensively addressed” at the board meeting on Monday.
In the leadership, however, there was a unanimous view that pursuing a lengthy debate on new leaders at this time made no sense.

Bas identified the reasons behind the loss. She said the SPD carries an image of caring only for fringe groups, which she believes is wrong, and that the party’s reform proposals are not resonating with voters.

She noted that the party has been “too consensual”, trying to please everyone while avoiding confrontation with specific groups-an approach she says does not work.
Instead, she stresses that the SPD insists on moving forward in a socially just way.
