German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) told the German news agency dpa that he had spoken for a “good half‑hour” with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday. The statement came from government spokesman Stefan Kornelius on Monday.
According to Merz, the conversation covered the situation in Iran, as well as developments in Israel and Ukraine. They also agreed to remain in close contact moving forward. Kornelius declined to provide further details about the topics discussed, citing the confidential nature of the call.
The tensions in the Iranian conflict have escalated recently. On Sunday night, Trump presented Iran with a 48‑hour ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz; failing that, he threatened attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure.
Kornelius said that the German government had “of course also taken note of Trump’s remarks”. However, he could not offer an interpretation of what those statements actually meant.
