Marie‑Agnes Strack‑Zimmermann, the FDP’s European policy chief, reportedly offered on Monday morning during the party’s presidium to assume the chairmanship-but only as part of a dual‑leadership arrangement. According to the “Spiegel” citing participants, she said she would be willing to take on the role together with a second person. Earlier, she had apparently expressed distrust toward party leader Christian Dürr.
The party’s statutes do not currently provide for a dual leadership, though a proposal for such a structure has already been submitted for consideration at the federal convention at the end of May. Meanwhile, the FDP, which had been part of a coalition government, suffered another crushing defeat in the Rhineland‑Palatine election this Sunday, failing to reach the five‑percent threshold.
