Slovenia Liberal Bloc Narrowly Triumphs Over Conservatives in Tight Parliamentary Race

In Slovenia’s latest parliamentary election, the ruling liberal coalition led by Prime Minister Robert Golob narrowly edged out the conservatives to become the strongest group in the 90‑seat parliament.

Golob’s Freedom Movement (GS) captured 28.6 % of the vote, translating to 29 seats. The Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), headed by former Prime Minister Janez Janša, received 28 % of the vote, earning 28 seats. The result represents a sharp decline for Golob’s party, which had secured 41 seats in the 2022 election. Despite the setback, Golob declared himself the victor.

With the outcome essentially a dead‑heat, coalition talks are expected to prove challenging. The election was also marred by accusations of attempted foreign interference.
