In the Munich mayoral by‑election, the Green Party candidate Dominik Krause defeated incumbent mayor Dieter Reiter of the SPD.
Shortly after the first results came in from the polling stations, Reiter congratulated his rival. “I’ve messed up; it was my fault” he said, and immediately announced that he was stepping away from politics, calling the day “the last day of my political career”.
Reiter has served as mayor of Munich since 2014. During the campaign he drew criticism over a licensing‑required position on FC Bayern Munich’s administrative board, a controversy focused largely on a high expense allowance. On March 11, he resigned from his roles within FC Bayern in response to the backlash.
