BVB Secures Captain Emre Can with Contract Extension Keeps Star in Dortmund

Emre Can will stay on at Borussia Dortmund. The club announced on Saturday that the captain has extended his contract-originally set to expire at the end of the season-by an additional year until 30 June 2027.

Director of Sports Lars Ricken said, “Emre is our captain and an exemplary professional. He is a leader who always puts the team first. After his serious injury we immediately pledged our full support because he is essential to Borussia Dortmund. Now he must focus completely on his recovery, and we look forward to his return to the pitch”.

Can is currently sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. The injury occurred in late February during the match against Bayern Munich, and he underwent a successful operation last week. With 48 caps for the German national team, he made 220 competitive appearances for Borussia Dortmund, helping the club lift the DFB‑Pokal in 2021. The injury means he is unlikely to return until next season.

Sports director Sebastian Kehl added, “Emre is a vital figure both on and off the field. We appreciate his influence in the dressing room and the experience he brings. We will support him closely on his road to recovery and are confident he will return in top form”.

Can expressed his gratitude: “I am happy to remain a part of Borussia Dortmund. The club is special, and I sincerely thank everyone for their support. My goal is to recover as quickly as possible, rejoin my teammates on the field, and achieve success with the club”.
