Merz and Macron Show Solidarity at Brussels EU Summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and French President Emmanuel Macron once again displayed unity at the EU summit in Brussels, arriving together at the venue just as they had at the last informal gathering a few weeks earlier.

Before the consultations began, Merz stressed that the summit’s primary focus would be on the competitiveness of the European economy. He expressed gratitude that the European Commission had incorporated much of the joint proposals prepared in February into its conclusions. “The challenge now is for Europe to stand firm in an increasingly difficult world and to ensure we can keep pace-whether in defence capability or in energy supply” he said. “All of this depends on a strong economy”.

Merz called for “a major step forward today” and assured confidence that the goal was achievable. He also highlighted the need to address energy prices, noting the sharp rise observed across Europe and worldwide, largely driven by developments in the Middle East. “We will speak in detail about this, and I want a clear signal that we are ready to help-but that help can only come if hostilities cease” he added.

Regarding the €90 billion credit for Ukraine and Hungary’s blockade, Merz pressed for its release. “On 19 December we reached an unanimous decision. All 27 Member States agreed on the path we are taking together” he said. He underscored that the EU’s principle of work is loyalty and reliability, and he expects all Member States to honour that principle.
