Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has named Grit Tüngler as the new head of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK). The administrative lawyer will assume the position on 1 April 2026, the Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday.
“Civil protection is a central pillar of our security architecture” Dobrindt said. He noted that the current security environment demands a response that is “modern, decisive and more resilient” and praised Tüngler for her experience, which will help strengthen Germany’s civil defence capabilities.
In her statement, Tüngler highlighted that civil protection and disaster assistance face significant challenges in the face of new risks and complex crises. Her goal is to make Germany even more resilient by expanding capacities for prevention, crisis management and rapid response.
Tüngler brings more than two decades of experience in various leadership roles within the federal administration. She has led the Air Safety section at the Federal Ministry of Transport and previously worked at the Federal Office for Shipping and Hydrography.
