Pope in Bahrain: Abolish the death penalty

Pope

Pope Francis had a busy agenda on the second day of his visit to Bahrain, which he concluded with an ecumenical mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia.

He prayed for peace and an end to the war in Ukraine.

Bahrain, unlike its Saudi neighbor, allows Christians and Jews to practice their faith, and there are communities from both faiths.

The Holy Father earlier met with the Sheikh of Cairo to deepen the good relations between them, which have allowed them to dialogue and understand each other to defend issues such as the fight against climate change.

But on the other side of Bahrain, citizens were on the streets, protesting for political pluralism and rights in a country that is a de facto dictatorship.

During his visit, the Pope called for the abolition of the death penalty in the country and for the guarantee of basic rights.
