After the local elections in Hesse, the Greens risk losing their dominant standing in Frankfurt am Main, the state’s largest city. According to the preliminary count, a little over 70 % of the polling districts have been tallied, and the CDU leads comfortably with roughly 26 % of the vote, while the Greens sit around 21 %. The parties have essentially reversed their positions compared to the election five years ago.
On a similar level to five years earlier, the SPD follows at about 16-17 %. The AfD, with approximately 10 % in the interim results, could double again, whereas the Left holds 9 %, a point higher than in the previous election. The FDP fell from 7.6 % in 2021 to just under five % in Frankfurt. Unlike federal or state elections, the 5 % hurdle does not apply in Hesse’s municipal contests.
In Wiesbaden, the second‑largest city, the CDU again enjoys a clear lead, securing roughly 26-27 % once almost all districts have been counted. Behind it come the SPD with about 22 %, the Greens near 15 %, the AfD around 13 %, the Left approximately 7 % and the FDP about 5 %.
Kassel offers a slightly different picture. Here the Greens may keep the top spot, albeit by a narrow margin: 22.4 % on 95 % of the ballots counted, slightly ahead of the CDU’s 21.8 %. The SPD trails with 19.7 %, the Left sits at 14.5 %, the AfD at 12.1 % and the FDP at only 3.1 %.
