Mainz 05 beat Werder Bremen 2-0 in the first Sunday fixture of the 26th Bundesliga round.
The German side took the lead in the sixth minute when Paul Nebel headed past the keeper after a cross from Phillipp Mwene.
In the 52nd minute Jae‑Sung Lee doubled the advantage, tapping an accurate, flat pass from Becker over the line with his heel.
Werder struggled to find rhythm. Their attempts were uneven; a header from Leonardo Bittencourt showed promise, but the team could not breach the compact defensive shape kept by Mainz.
Mainz controlled the game, passing the ball safely through their ranks, and preserved the lead quietly. The closing minutes saw no significant drama, as the hosts managed the match’s pace while the visitors ran out of breakthrough ideas.
The result lifts Mainz closer to safety, moving them to 13th place, while Werder slides to 15th. Werder’s next match is against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, whereas Mainz will travel to face Sigma Olmütz in the Conference League on Thursday.
