Bundeswehr Divided on Hormuz Mission with Ernst Urging International Marine Deployment

Germany’s coalition experts remain split over whether the Bundeswehr should join an international naval operation in the Strait of Hormuz.
CDU defence politician Bastian Ernst supports participation. He explained that the Houthi militia in Yemen had halted attacks on civilian shipping in the Red Sea, which made the EU’s Aspides mission less critical. “That could change again if the Houthis resume attacks out of solidarity with Iran” Ernst told “Die Welt”. He stressed that Germany must be prepared, coordinate with partners, and adjust its contribution. The Bundestag has authorized a mandate for up to 350 troops. Ernst said this would be enough to deploy a frigate or a long‑range maritime reconnaissance vessel.

In contrast, SPD foreign‑policy spokesperson Adis Ahmetovic rejects any involvement. “The SPD is clear: we will not participate in the Iran war” Ahmetovic said. He argued that the attacks lack legal justification under international law and that the associated risks to regional stability and European security run counter to German interests. The government should make it unmistakable that its principles and interests are aligned and that international law remains the cornerstone of German foreign policy.

The evolving situation in the Iran conflict has only strengthened the SPD’s position. Ahmetovic highlighted contradictory signals from the former Trump administration and the Israeli government, which are making the situation increasingly opaque and difficult to calculate. He urged Germany to focus on diplomatic efforts together with the EU, Gulf states, and Turkey, aiming to bring the war to an end as quickly as possible. Otherwise the entire region could be harmed, and the negative economic consequences for the world economy would continue to grow daily.
