Former SPD general secretary Kevin Kühnert says that, at present, a red‑red‑green coalition at the federal level seems unlikely – mainly because of foreign‑policy concerns. Speaking at a Stern event in Hamburg on Thursday evening, he added that he “appreciates some of what’s happening in the left party”. He pointed out that the party’s foreign‑policy positions have become an even stronger argument against such a partnership than before.
In particular, Kühnert criticized the party’s handling of the war in Ukraine. “I still don’t understand it: They are uneasy about sending weapons yet do not want to be like Sahra Wagenknecht”. When asked how someone should take responsibility on this basis, he replied that it made no sense to him.
Earlier, Kühnert – who now works for the Bürgerbewegung Finanzwende – had promoted a red‑red‑green alliance as a “serious option”. He said he does not want to totally rule out such a coalition in the future and added, “I would not fixate on a distant future”.
