German transport companies warn that the sharp rise in fuel prices will push consumer prices higher. Dirk Engelhardt, spokesperson for the Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung (BGL), told the Bild newspaper (Thursday edition) that the current diesel price increases could lift freight costs by up to ten percent. If logistics costs climb, Engelhardt added, the price of goods in retail will rise as well-“from shampoo to a case of beer, every daily product will become more expensive for customers”. According to the association, trucks carry about 85 percent of all goods in Germany.
