In Berlin on Tuesday, 14 civil‑society organisations announced the formation of a new Social State Alliance, aiming to strengthen and future‑proof Germany’s welfare state. The alliance criticises the growing narrative in political debate that frames the social state as financially unsustainable or merely a cost burden. Instead, it offers a “positive, fact‑based perspective” that the social state is not only financially viable but also essential for social peace, economic participation and democratic stability.
The coalition urges the federal government to ensure that Germany’s ecological transformation is socially equitable. With a worrying trend of eroding trust in public institutions, the organisations seek to increase pressure on policymakers to underscore the social state’s role in guaranteeing social security and societal cohesion.
Members of the alliance include:
– Arbeiter‑Samariter‑Bund Deutschland
– Arbeiterwohlfahrt
– Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland
– Deutsche Caritasverband
– Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund
– Deutscher Mieterbund
– Paritätischer Gesamtverband
– Diakonie Deutschland
– IG Metall
– SoVD
– Sozialverband VdK
– Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft Verdi
– Volkssolidarität
– Zentralwohlfahrtsstelle der Juden in Deutschland
