US Stock Markets Rise as Oil Prices Turbulent

The US stock markets finished higher on Monday. At New York’s market close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 47,740 points, up 0.5 percent from the previous day. The broader S&P 500 had risen 0.8 percent to about 6,795 points, while the technology‑heavy Nasdaq 100 was up 1.3 percent at roughly 24,965 points.

Wall Street had suffered noticeable losses early in the session, but the gains over the day more than offset those losses, putting the markets in the black by close. Energy prices remained a key focus. Many investors now expect the Iran conflict to continue longer than originally anticipated. Oil briefly crossed the $100‑a‑barrel mark on Monday, but the price fell back later in the trading day.

Brent crude, the benchmark North Sea oil, traded at $89.63 a barrel at around 21:00 German time on Monday evening-306 cents, or 3.3 percent, below its prior close.
The euro was stronger at the same time: one euro bought $1.1614, meaning one dollar could be exchanged for €0.8610.

Gold also benefited from the rise in energy prices. Evening trading saw the price of a troy ounce climb to $5,141-an increase of 0.2 percent-equivalent to €142.31 per gram.
