Baden Württemberg FDP Leader Rülke Signals Resignation If Party Falls Short in State Election

After the likely withdrawal of the FDP from the state parliament in Baden‑Württemberg, state chairman Hans‑Ulrich Rülke has indicated that he will resign. He told SWR on Sunday evening that should the party fail to cross the five‑percent threshold, he will “naturally” step down as chairperson. Current polls suggest the FDP is clearly on its way out of the parliament, losing its core region.

According to the latest estimates from ARD and ZDF, the Greens are projected to secure 30.6 percent of the vote. This would place them ahead of the CDU, which is poll at 29.7 percent, and would likely give Greens’ lead candidate Cem Özdemir the chance to become prime minister if the green‑black coalition continues. The CDU also has the numbers to potentially partner with the AfD, which is predicted to receive 18.5 percent, but the Christians‑democrats rule out such an alliance. The election day has been harsh for the SPD, which is expected to receive only 5.6 percent. The FDP falls short at 4.4 percent and the Left, with the same result, will also fail to enter the parliament.
