The Iranian experts council appears to have elected a successor for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to the Iranian news agencies Mehr and ISNA on Sunday.
It is said that the votes have already been taken and a result has been decided. Now everything hinges on Hosseini Bushehri, head of the secretariat of the experts council, who is responsible for the public announcement of the decision.
The 88‑member experts council in Iran is tasked with selecting and overseeing the Supreme Leader. Speculation recently floated that Khamenei’s son, Moustafa Al‑Mahdi, might be the chosen successor. Israel has already warned all potential successors that it would consider targeting them as well.
