Bundestag Chair Defends US-Israel Military Action Against Iran, Denies Legal Concerns

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) defended the military operation launched by Israel and the United States against Iran, dismissing international‑law concerns as unfounded. Speaking to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group, she said that the Middle‑East crisis did not begin with the recent strike. “When assessing and evaluating the situation, we cannot ignore what happened before” she noted. “Israel-the only democracy in the region-is nearly surrounded by states that seek to destroy both Israel and the West as a whole”. Klöckner further accused Iran of worldwide terrorist financing and of supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine.

When asked whether the offensive against Iran was justified under international law, she replied: “International law matters. But if it becomes a shield for terrorists who slaughter their own people and systematically oppress women, we can examine that theory. It is a moral question”. She added that “it is interesting to see who invokes international law and when. I am concerned about what is happening on German soil-at universities and the resurgence of antisemitism in our society”. Klöckner stressed that antisemitism is not limited to the far right but also manifests in intellectual left‑wing circles and Islamist‑fundamentalist groups, saying they had “a lot of work to do”.

In recent days, German legal scholars, leaders of the SPD, and United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres have all expressed the view that the military attack on Iran lacks legal justification under international law.
