The United Nations has expressed “growing concern” about deaths reported in anti-government protests in Iran.
“We condemn all incidents that have resulted in the death or serious injury of protesters and reiterate that security forces must avoid any unnecessary or disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in New York.
The United Nations called on the Iranian government in Tehran to respect human rights, noting that the crisis can and should be brought under control through dialogue.
Nationwide protests have spread across Iran, in over 125 cities. At least 270 people have been killed and about 14,000 protesters have been arrested, according to the Iran Human Rights Activist Group.
