Germany Cabinet Nominates Gabriel Felbermayr as New Economic Expert for National Development Review

The German federal government has proposed appointing Gabriel Felbermayr to the Advisory Council on the Economic Outlook. On Wednesday the cabinet, following a suggestion from Economy Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU), adopted a resolution to nominate him. Felbermayr will serve until 28 February 2031.

He has been director of Austria’s Institute for Economic Research in Vienna and a professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business since 2021. Prior to that, he led the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. His research focuses on international trade theory and policy, labour‑market studies, and European economic integration.

Reiche said that Felbermayr brings “a recognized specialist in trade policy, geo‑economics, and European integration” to the council. She added that “his analytical depth and international experience are especially valuable in today’s geopolitical climate”. Felbermayr will replace Ulrike Malmendier, whose mandate was not renewed.
