After the escalation in the Middle East, gas prices surged by roughly 25 % on Monday. At noon, European wholesale quotes for April delivery rose to as high as €48 per megawatt‑hour, which translates to a consumer price of about 10 to 12 cents per kilowatt‑hour when ancillary charges and taxes are included. In the morning the price was just over €38 per megawatt‑hour, corresponding to a consumer cost of around 9 to 11 cents per kilowatt‑hour.
Only about half of the consumer price is directly linked to the wholesale figure; the rest is attributable to network usage fees, the CO₂ tax, and other costs.
