German confidence in the United States has fallen sharply.
A survey by the Allensbach Institute for Demography for the FAZ shows that the share of people who favor close cooperation with the US dropped from 62 % in 2020 to only 34 % now.
Sixty‑four percent of respondents see no positive aspects in Donald Trump’s politics. Yet 55 % say Germany still relies on American military protection. In the survey conducted before the US attack on Iran, 90 % viewed the global situation as threatening.
In light of these views, many Germans are placing greater importance on cooperation with European neighbours. Seventy‑five percent say Germany should work closely with France, 57 % with the United Kingdom and 51 % with Poland. The proportion of respondents who consider Poland an important partner has more than doubled over the past two decades.
Support for the idea of a European army has risen sharply. In 2017, 34 % were in favour and 35 % opposed. Today, 49 % back it while only 21 % oppose. Fifty‑four percent agree with the statement “Europe is our future”. The strongest majority, 65 %, is found among those aged 16 to 29.
The survey, conducted between 6 and 19 February, included 1,052 participants.
