RWE Rejects Mini Reactor Investment Saying SMRs Not Economically Viable

Markus Krebber, head of RWE, says that investing in small modular reactors (SMRs) is not economically feasible at present, tempering expectations that these plants could quickly solve Germany’s electricity market problems.

“We are a technology‑open company and keep an eye on all technologies, including SMRs” he told the news portal Politico. “Today we cannot say when or if this technology will become commercially mature. Right now, a private‑sector investment in SMRs simply isn’t conceivable”.

Krebber added that the technology is not yet market‑ready. At the moment, no single supplier worldwide can guarantee a fixed construction time and cost. “That level of investment risk is one we-as a private company-are not prepared to accept” he explained.

He rejected the idea of an overnight fix. “SMRs are absolutely not the solution that will solve all problems overnight” he cautioned.
