The steering committee of the National Decade Against Post‑Infectious Diseases agreed on its first measures during its inaugural meeting.
On Friday the Federal Ministry of Research announced that, with Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU), the urgency of better understanding the causes and mechanisms of post‑infectious conditions and rapid development of new therapies was reaffirmed.
Among the actions decided were:
– Creation of a comprehensive data repository on post‑infectious diseases.
– Promotion of genome sequencing of both healthy and affected individuals.
– Strengthening clinical trials from Phase II through 3a, with the goal of quickly testing promising treatment approaches in real‑world practice.
– Establishment of theme‑specific working groups dedicated to translating research findings into clinical application.
The ministry is working closely with stakeholders from the federal and state governments, research institutions, the healthcare sector and the health‑economy industry. In total, thirteen institutions and associations are involved.
Implementation of the measures is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with additional funding calls planned for later in the year.
