The number of unemployed people rose in February compared with the same month last year, but fell from January as is typical during the winter break.
On Friday in Nuremberg the Federal Employment Agency announced that 3 070 000 people were registered as unemployed-15 000 fewer than in January and, according to the agency, 81 000 more than in February 2025. Seasonally adjusted, the agency estimates a monthly increase of 1 000 individuals.
Executive director Andrea Nahles noted, “Even at the end of the winter break the labour market is not picking up momentum. Unemployment hardly changes and remains above three million”.
In the sector of “underemployment” which combines unemployment, labour‑market policy, and temporary inability to work, the seasonally adjusted figure fell by 3 000 from the previous month. With 3 724 000 people, it is also modestly lower than a year ago by 4 000.
