The next presidential election will take place in late January 2027. According to the Bundestag, President of the Bundestag Julia Klöckner (CDU) announced Thursday that the 18th Federal Convention will convene on 30 January 2027 to elect the new head of state. The convention will meet in the Bundestag chamber on that day.
This date follows the week during which the Bundestag will observe a memorial hour for the victims of National Socialism on 27 January 2027. The expanded seating arrangement required for the Federal Convention can be used for the memorial as well, making the arrangement efficient, conserving resources, and widening the invitation list.
Under the Basic Law and the Federal President Election Act, the sitting President of the Bundestag decides the time and place of the Federal Convention and is responsible for its preparation, conduct, and aftermath. The Convention must convene no later than 30 days before the incumbent President’s term ends. Frank‑Walter Steinmeier’s term will expire on 18 March 2027, so the latest possible meeting date would have been 16 February 2027. The previously expected date of 14 February 2027 would have conflicted with the Munich Security Conference.
