Artificial intelligence on smartphones is becoming increasingly everyday for many users in Germany. A survey by the IT industry association Bitkom found that 38 % of smartphone owners use AI features regularly, with the habit especially common among people under 30, where 54 % report using them. About a third of respondents (33 %) said they would be willing to pay extra for more advanced AI functions.
Sixty‑four percent of smartphone users already employ voice assistants, and 56 % use chatbots on their devices. AI has also become a standard in camera operations: roughly 42 % rely on AI photo‑editing tools such as a “magic eraser” and 37 % let AI suggest text when writing messages. One‑fifth (22 %) use AI summarisation to condense long texts and news articles.
The study also points to the next growth areas. When asked which feature they would like to use in the future, almost half of respondents (49 %) chose AI spam filters that block unwanted or fraudulent calls, while a further 36 % wanted more assistance when drafting messages.
Bitkom Research conducted the telephone survey with 1,006 people aged 16 and older in Germany, including 861 who use their smartphone privately. Interviews were carried out between the first and fifth calendar weeks of 2026.
