Annegret Kramp‑Karrenbauer, chairwoman of the Konrad‑Adenauer‑Stiftung- a foundation closely tied to the CDU-has said she is “deeply upset” by the recent public debate over a possible first female German president. In an interview with the television channel “Welt”, she explained, “I must be honest: this debate we’ve been having in recent weeks truly angers me”. She warned that the country’s highest office deserves dignity and should not be treated like a “carpet bazaar”. For her, the matter should not be discussed publicly, let alone used as a theme for campaign speeches. “The office has dignity, and that dignity must be preserved” she insisted. Interestingly, Kramp‑Karrenbauer herself is now considered part of the enlarged pool of potential candidates for next year’s presidential election.
