Chancellor and CDU leader Friedrich Merz admitted during his opening address at the national party meeting that he had made some promises that were perhaps too lofty.
“Maybe after the change of government we didn’t make it clear quickly enough that this massive reform effort will not be achieved overnight” Merz said on Friday in Stuttgart. “I accept that criticism” he added. “But we must remain bold, and someone has to stand on the bridge to keep the momentum going”.
He emphasized his belief in the positive power of such a vision: “I want to say what can be done, not constantly point out what can’t”.
Later that afternoon, Merz will be re‑elected as party chair by CDU delegates. The result will be watched closely-he received about 90 % approval when he was last chosen in 2024.
