Following the elevation of the AfD in Lower Saxony by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution to a “significant extremist threat” Green Party parliamentary group leader Irene Mihalic has called on both the federal government and the states to jointly examine a possible ban on the party.
“By classifying the AfD’s state association as a significant target of observation, it becomes clear that extremist aims are not confined to specific regions” the Bundestag MP told the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday. “Even West German state affiliates pursue an agenda that is incompatible with the core values of our constitution”.
Mihalic added that her group will continue to push for a working group made up of federal and state security agencies to compile their intelligence material and assess whether a party‑banning procedure is warranted. “The AfD openly promotes a right‑wing extremist agenda; we can no longer sit idly by”.
