Berlin Doubles Citizenship Numbers to Nearly 40,000

Berlin has nearly doubled its number of naturalisations last year, according to figures from the State Office for Immigration, as reported by Bild on its Monday edition. In 2025, 39,034 people were granted German citizenship-almost twice the 21,811 cases in 2024 and nearly four times the 9,041 naturalisations in 2023. The capital thus reached a new high.

The same trend is seen in Hamburg, where the figure of naturalisations rose again. After 7,538 cases in 2023 and 9,599 in 2024, the city welcomed 11,532 new citizens in 2025, setting another record for the Hanseatic city.
