Singer Howard Carpendale warns that a career in the music industry is almost impossible today because of artificial intelligence. “Learn basketball. You’ll have a better chance of making a living that way than with music” the veteran told aspiring artists in an interview for the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”.
His worries stem from AI’s growing ability to compose its own music. Adding to the problem, young talent finds it hard to break through the massive competition on streaming platforms. “Around 80,000 new titles hit the market worldwide every day” Carpendale says. He argues that those who wish to establish themselves as musicians now have to rely on hope: “Write your own songs, upload them, and pray. That’s the only way”.
Carpendale is not expecting any major success for himself either. “I do not count on ever having another big hit again” he explained. “The industry is broken”.
