Bundestag’s Marie‑Elisabeth‑Lüders House Delayed Again by New Construction Hurdles

A letter from Bundestag Vice‑President Omid Nouripour (Greens) to the parliamentary construction commission has warned that the handover of office areas in the extension building of the Marie‑Elisabeth‑Lüders‑Haus is again going to be delayed. According to the letter, the responsible federal agency, the BBR (Federal Ministry for Building and Regional Planning), now expects the move‑in date to be “early June 2026”. Previously, the expectation had been “the end of the first quarter”. The BBR says it is “working hard” to meet the new deadline, although it has made no guarantee that the date will be kept.

Nouripour criticises the project as suffering from “insufficient strategic steering and professional coordination of the building services by the BBR”. He points out that the ministerial department responsible for construction has “so far not been visible at all” throughout the whole process. He notes that the building is now in its 13th year of delay, offering a comparison to the Berlin‑Brandenburg Airport, whose commissioning was delayed by nine years in total.

The new setbacks stem from technical building equipment problems, particularly issues with the electrical voltage and the fire, burglary and smoke extraction systems. The letter was reported by the news magazine Politico.
