German Government Pursues Solution to Keep Schwedt Refinery Running Securely and Prevent Fuel Shortages

The German federal government is still working on a solution that will keep the Schwedt refinery operating smoothly and prevent any looming fuel shortages. This was stated by spokesperson Elisabeth Kaiser (SPD), a representative of the eastern affairs commissioner, on Monday.

The current situation presents a challenge, but there is no reason for concern. Measures are being taken to maintain supply security. Kaiser’s spokeswoman described Schwedt as an “essential supply point for eastern Germany”. Therefore, the refinery must be secured and future‑proofed. She added that she is closely monitoring the dynamic situation.

The government is pursuing a sanctions‑compliant arrangement to ensure the continued operation of the PCK refinery in Schwedt. Continuous work on viable solutions is deemed crucial for maintaining supply security.

The push comes against the backdrop of U.S. sanctions. German authorities are negotiating with the U.S. Treasury Department for an extension of the production licence for the refinery, which is majority‑owned by German subsidiaries of the Russian conglomerate Rosneft. The current suspension of sanctions is only in effect until April 29.
