German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) will continue the checks at all German land borders. According to “Bild”, the temporary internal border controls will be extended by another six months beyond 15 March 2026.
The federal government says it is responding to the ongoing security situation. According to the newspaper’s government sources, a formal notification is currently being sent to the European Commission in Brussels. Because systematic checks in the Schengen area are normally not allowed, this formal step with the EU authority is mandatory.
“We are extending border checks on our borders with neighboring countries” Dobrindt told the paper. “Border controls are part of our restructuring of migration policy in Germany”.
