After U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke at the Munich Security Conference, the SPD now sees only limited hope for a stronger transatlantic relationship.
Deputy parliamentary‑group leader Siemtje Möller told the Sunday edition of the “Tagesspiegel” that Rubio’s address differed markedly in tone from J.D. Vance’s speech the previous year, yet it offered no reassurance. She said the United States appear to have realized how much trust had lately been misplaced and are now trying to limit damage. However, a friendship cannot simply be built on Europe behaving exactly as the United States envisions.
Möller referred to Rubio’s invitation to Europeans to accompany the U.S. on its course. “Rubio, who is responsible for the National Security Strategy, did not downplay its core premises” she noted. She added that the “exaggerated, almost woodcut‑like vision of a Europe restored to an old cultural greatness” remains highly problematic-a view Rubio presented in his call to noble civilizations.
