CDU Party at Stuttgart Shuts Down Alcohol as Merz Orders Ban to Keep Sessions Focused

The CDU is limiting alcohol consumption at its federal party congress, scheduled for next weekend in Stuttgart, following a decision by party leader Friedrich Merz.
A letter from the CDU headquarters to exhibitors, cited by the “Tagesspiegel” (Sunday edition), explains that the party must adjust the alcohol service schedule on Friday evening. The message, titled “Adjustment of catering on Friday (20.02.2026)” was sent by the “Main Organisation and Events Department” and requests that exhibitors omit alcoholic drink service during the exhibition.

The central office emphasised that in order to finish the ambitious programme of proposal‑consultations on time, delegates must remain in the plenary chamber until the session ends. Therefore, the catering will commence only after the “Baden‑Württemberg evening” following the conclusion of the meeting. The letter apologises for the last‑minute change and thanks exhibitors for their flexibility, noting that their cooperation helps ensure a smooth parliamentary process.

Typical of CDU party‑congresses, a variety of exhibitors will be present around the plenary hall, including Airbus, Amazon, Deutsche Telekom, Google, Haus & Grund, Lieferando, Mastercard, Philip Morris, SAP, Uber, and the German Association of the Automotive Industry.

The CDU federal congress runs Friday and Saturday next week in Stuttgart. Key items on the agenda include elections and the candidacy of Chancellor Merz for the party chairmanship. He is scheduled to give a speech before the congress begins, and numerous procedural motions will be debated, covering topics such as part‑time work and a proposed social‑media ban for children and teenagers.

Prior to the official opening on Friday, the party presidency and federal board meet on Thursday afternoon, and party delegations convene. Thursday evening will feature a press reception where alcoholic drinks will be served.
