On Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU will give Ukraine up to 18 billion euros in financial aid throughout 2023 to cover the war-torn country’s basic budgetary needs.
“It is very important that Ukraine has a predictable and stable flow of income,” von der Leyen said at the end of the two-day meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this month that his country will need about $55 billion (€56 billion) to cover next year’s budget deficit and repair damaged infrastructure.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has estimated that, by 2023, Ukraine will need between 3 and 4 billion euros in foreign aid on a monthly basis to keep its public services running against the backdrop of Russian occupation.
