UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, the Green Party politician, called on Europe to boost its confidence ahead of the Munich Security Conference. “If the EU finally matures in foreign policy, the emerging multipolar world order could become a huge opportunity for Europe” she told the news portal T‑Online. “The EU already hosts the largest single market. By leveraging it for security through free‑trade agreements, the region will be less vulnerable to coercion in the future”.
The former foreign minister cited the EU’s handling of the Greenland dispute as a model that could guide its approach to U.S. President Donald Trump. “The EU stepped forward decisively, confrontationally addressing false claims and demands regarding Greenland” Baerbock explained. “If we begin to bargain over facts and truth instead, we’ll be caught in a nightmare”. She warned against complacency. “Fear of the next tariff threat can prompt the abandonment of European solidarity or passive appeasement, and then the EU as a whole will become a pawn”.
Baerbock herself moved to New York for her new role at the United Nations. “We all know how painful it is when a friendship hangs in the balance because shared interests and values have slipped” she reflected on the transatlantic alliance. “Today more and more people in the United States feel that same loss. That’s why, in my view, it’s essential to discuss economic and security policy not just in abstract terms but in concrete, everyday reality”.
