SPD Women Call for Female President to Succeed Steinmeier

The Association of Social Democratic Women in the SPD urges that in the coming year, for the first time, a woman should succeed Frank‑Walter Steinmeier as Federal President. ”It is finally time for a woman in the highest state office” said Carmen Wegge, chair of the SPD Women, to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group (Friday editions). She added that after twelve men have held the post, a female president would send a powerful signal that equality is not merely a goal but a lived reality. Wegge did not name any specific candidates, only noting that many outstanding women could be imagined for the role.

The Greens also insist on electing a woman as president next year. ”Although nothing has yet been discussed in the Green parliamentary group about Steinmeier’s successor, I have long believed the time is ripe for a woman as Federal President” said caucus chair Britta Haßelmann to the Funke newspapers.
