Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) entered the Munich Security Conference on Friday with high expectations. He said the conference will tackle challenges that no single country can solve alone. “We will discuss the future of a sovereign Ukraine, our security in Europe, the trans‑Atlantic relationship, the situation in the Middle East, and the strengthening of global partnerships-responsibility, strength, reliability, and stability”. Wadephul added that Germany will continue to play an active, powerful role in all of these areas.
The minister highlighted the importance of military strength and committed diplomacy as core security resources. “In times of growing uncertainty, focusing on our core interests and values remains our guiding principle” he said. “In an era of global upheaval and a resurgence of power politics, political reliability and participation are our greatest assets for maintaining a stable, rules‑based international order”.
Wadephul underscored that German foreign and security policy is rooted in a European foundation that offers far more than mere prosperity. He spoke of the need for a collective European effort in face of Russian challenges, and stressed the significance of trans‑Atlantic ties. “We recognize the indispensability of our trans‑Atlantic positioning and have great confidence in it. We will do everything to keep the trans‑Atlantic bond strong”.
