Haßelmann Denies Merkel Presidential Bid Greens Refute Former Chancellor Run

The Green Party has denied that it plans to propose former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) for the office of Federal President.
Green parliamentary group leader Britta Haßelmann told the “Rheinische Post” on Friday that Merkel has already spoken out herself and that there is nothing to support the rumors. “There has been nothing discussed or decided on the election of a president in our ranks at this time” she added.

Merkel’s office also rejected the speculation. In a reply to “Tagesspiegel” on Monday, a spokesperson for the office of the former Chancellor called the claim “absurd”.

Earlier, “Bild” reported that top CDU officials were uneasy about the possibility that the Greens might nominate Merkel for the presidency. Historically, no former chancellor has ever taken up the role of federal president after leaving office.

The Federal Convention will vote on the successor to Frank‑Walter Steinmeier in early 2027. The Union is expected to form the largest parliamentary faction, and the call for a first female head of state has been growing more frequently in public discourse.
