Last year, many classic Valentine’s Day presents cost consumers noticeably more than usual. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the price of chocolate rose 17.8 % in 2025 compared with 2024. Fresh cut flowers saw a 5.3 % price increase over the same period.
Even those who prefer spending a night out rather than giving chocolate or flowers faced higher costs. Prices for food and drinks at restaurants, cafés, bars and similar venues jumped 3.6 % from 2024 to 2025. In the broader economy, consumer prices overall grew 2.2 % during that time.
Looking at a longer time frame, classic Valentine’s gifts have become even more expensive. In 2025, chocolate prices were 41.7 % higher than they were in 2020, while cut‑flower prices were 38.2 % above 2020 levels. Food and drink prices in restaurants, cafés, bars, and similar venues were 31.8 % higher, compared with a 21.9 % rise in overall consumer prices over the same period.
