German President Relocation Delayed Until Summer Break

The planned spring move of President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier and the Presidential Office to a temporary location is being delayed.

According to a spokesperson, the building is now expected to be handed over in the spring, with the relocation to take place before the summer break. Originally, Steinmeier and the office were supposed to move into interim premises in Berlin‑Moabit during spring, but the unusually harsh winter in Berlin has stalled work on the new quarters.

The recent weather conditions have affected construction operations, causing delays in finishing the project. As a result, the move is likely to be postponed by at least three months. While the “Spiegel” previously anticipated the transition around Easter, the new target is now July, rather than April.

The relocation is necessary because extensive refurbishment of Schloss Bellevue, the building that houses the Presidential Office, and its surrounding grounds is underway, a project that is expected to take roughly five years to complete.
