Germany’s federal government intends to prolong the validity of the industrial electricity price beyond 2028 and to widen the pool of companies that qualify for subsidies. A spokesperson from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) confirmed, in response to an inquiry by Politico’s “Energie und Klima” newsletter, that talks with the European Commission are underway.
The ministry clarified that any enlargement of the subsidy‑eligible group or an extension of the three‑year period currently in place would only be possible if the EU Commission adopts the necessary decisions. The spokesperson added that discussions are ongoing, but the outcome remains uncertain.
The EU Commission, when asked, said it is in “close and constructive contact” with the German government about the industrial electricity price. A spokesperson declined to comment on current talks with individual member states. The German ministry also did not disclose a specific date for when the desired extension would take effect.
