In the opening fixture of the 21st Bundesliga week, 1. FC Köln were beaten 1‑2 by RB Leipzig. The match was marked by plenty of close duels and several VAR rulings. After the break, Köln pushed hard and managed a comeback when Jan Thielmann equalised in the 51st minute, capitalising on a rebound inside the penalty area. Five minutes later, Leipzig restored their lead with another goal from Baumgartner. In the final minutes the home side pressed for another equaliser but could not breach Leipzig’s defence.
With the victory, Leipzig climb to fourth place in the table, while Köln remain in tenth. Köln’s next match is against Stuttgart on Saturday, whereas Leipzig will take on Bayern Munich in the DFB‑Pokal on Wednesday.
